Many women struggle to have a career and a family simultaneously. Pregnancy discrimination laws are supposed to help. Just like race, gender, age, and religion, pregnancy is a protected status in U.S. and California employment law. Under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act it is illegal to harass someone because of their pregnancy, childbirth or related medical condition. Employers and employees who commit the harassment may be liable for violations of this law. Creation of a hostile work environment because of pregnancy is a form of harassment.

Not only is sexual harassment illegal. The law also prohibits:
- Racial harassment
- Religious harassment
- Age-based harassment
- Harassment based on disability
- Harassment based on ethnicity or national origin
- Retaliation
Most people are familiar with workplace sexual harassment claims. Harassment in professional, business, and educational relationships are also illegal.
